Deliciously Green

IMG_4012Diet is a large component of being an elite athlete. Even with all I’ve learned about nutrition and in revamping my diet due to food allergies, I am still finding ways to eat more greens. I’ve found that juicing helps me accomplish this. For the most part I follow recipes I find online, but I do make some up on my own or add ingredients all the time. I abide by the “golden rule of juicing,” a 2:1 ratio of fruit to vegetables. Lesson learned after making one juice concoction where I just threw a lot of vegetables together… let me tell you it wasn’t my favorite!

I’ve also learned that recipes don’t have to be complicated; sometimes just two or three ingredients at the right ratio taste delicious! A few months back I got the Breville juicer and have really enjoyed it. With a Bed Bath and Beyond 20% off coupon I was able to cut off a little of the price and I knew I was investing in a good juicer. It’s super easy to clean and it extracts a surprisingly large amount of juice from just about anything. My dad commented that he thought it could get juice out of rocks if we tried, haha!

Deliciously Green was inspired by reading a few “intro to drinking green” recipes. I haven’t been able to do kale-based juices yet, it’s just so leafy and grassy tasting, but maybe I’ll work up to that! However, I have loved spinach in most of my juicing recipes and mixed with the strawberries and lemon in this juice it’s extremely easy to drink.  With the Breville I don’t have to cut or peel anything, I just throw it all in the juicer!

Does anyone have a good kale recipe to get me started?

Below is the Deliciously Green recipe, I hope you like it!

Thanks for reading!

Deliciously Green

Ingredients

  • 6 Large Strawberries
  • 2 Medium Apples
  • .5 Lemon
  • 4 stalks celery
  • 1 cucumber
  • 5 handfuls spinach

Directions

Step 1 My juicer has a "low" setting to get more juice out of softer items such as grapes, pears, peaches, etc. In this case the strawberries. Juice the strawberries on low.
Step 2 On high juice all other ingredients. No need to peel the lemon, just cut it in half and throw it it rind and all!
Step 3 The different ingredients will be separated in the container, so stir and serve!
